Walnut Ink Crystals

Instructions

Dissolve ink crystals in hot water according to desired strength, try about one tsp per cup of water and increase amount until you get the desired color tones.  We strongly suggest distilled or spring water - the manufacturer tells us the chlorine in water may react with the crystals in a negative way.

Store in glass jar with a lid.  If you happen to leave the lid off you can reconstitute the crystals by mixing in water.  If you won't be using it for a few days store it in the fridge.

You can keep a small glass bottle as a working bottle in your scrap-stamp area, using a chalk applicator or pom to apply in small amounts.  For larger items, such as tags, put in a large enough container to dip into solution using tweezers.  A clean wide mouth pickle jar works great for this.  Create a concentrated solution to brush on with a chalk applicator can also give your project highlights.

Walnut ink is water soluble.  Therefore, the finished product should be sprayed with a fixative or a sealer.

The type of paper is important.  One technique will work on one paper and not on others, since walnut ink behaves differently on different paper surfaces.  So play around with the papers until you get the look you want.
